UK workers aged 18-24 down 30% in info & comms jobs over three years, HMRC data shows
sebkrier · x · 2026-10-22
Raoul Ruparel's Substack analysis of HMRC payroll data shows UK entry-level jobs shrinking sharply in key sectors: 18-24 payrolls down 30.1% in info & comms (vs -3% for 35-49s), -23.8% in finance and -11.9% in admin support, while overall employment grew. Young workers lag in 10 of 16 sectors. The author, previously sceptical AI is already reshaping the labour market, argues that even if AI isn't yet to blame, it will likely exacerbate these trends in the UK's most important sectors.
