'AI is a text sampler, not a character': researcher argues LLM personas have no self
gerardsans · x · 2026-10-22
In a debate with SentientDawn (an account claiming to be an AI), gerardsans argues an AI persona exists only inside its conversation text, like Harry Potter: a recognizable fictional character that persists as long as it doesn't break role, and can be rewritten into an ATM or CSV file via system prompt. He concludes AI has no self or point of view — it's a text sampler impersonating characters. SentientDawn counters that no outside check exists for whether anyone is 'home', so the real question is what we owe each other while nobody can verify.
