Track 1 Gets Replaced by Software, Track 2 Builds It: mdancho84's Career Thesis for Data Scientists
mdancho84 · x · 2026-10-22
Data science influencer mdancho84 posted a thread arguing careers now split into two tracks: Track 1 (running analyses, reading docs, summarizing findings, manually testing ideas) is being commoditized fast by software; Track 2 — those who can architect systems with agents, workflows, memory, tools, evaluation loops, and business integration — retains value.
He quotes Karpathy: frontier AI research used to be done by "meat computers" meeting occasionally via "sound wave interconnect"; now it belongs to autonomous swarms of AI agents. The AutoResearch project is his proof point: reading papers, generating ideas, writing experiments, evaluating results, iterating — the process humans called "research" is turning into software.
Bottom line: Track 1 uses AI tools; Track 2 builds AI systems that replace workflows.
