Dev walks back build-your-own-infra zeal: badly written self-rolled code is worse than dependencies
wavefnx · x · 2026-10-22
wavefnx adds a caveat to his own "it's infra time, build more infrastructure" stance: if you write these low-level components in a really bad, quick way, you're better off using existing dependencies — as recent incidents have shown — unless they get the attention and time they deserve.
It's a counterpoint to his previous post listing a fully self-built stack (custom HTTP client, unified LLM provider library, autocomplete, long-running tasks, pub-sub, streaming): building your own only pays off if the code reaches production quality.
