Meta's Private Processing lets WhatsApp AI handle messages no one can read
kingslyj · x · 2026-10-22
A discussion of two approaches to private AI chats:
- Context: Deepinder Goyal launched E2E-encrypted AI chats on self-hosted open-weight models that even the operator can't read; commenters note ChatGPT's Locked Chats is just a PIN, not encryption — the real question is where chats get decrypted when the model runs on the provider's servers.
- Meta's approach: Meta's engineering blog details Private Processing for WhatsApp, an optional capability that routes messages into a confidential, secure environment for AI tasks like summarization, inaccessible to Meta, WhatsApp, or anyone else, with independent researchers able to continuously verify the architecture.
- Caveat: Not technically E2EE, but services can act as blind intermediaries — WhatsApp uses Oblivious HTTP for something similar.
