European AI models leave cleaner, more auditable trails, but still lack frontier scale

The author compares labs by externally observable artifacts: data/model card quality, completeness of evaluation docs, provenance consistency across papers/repos/regulatory filings, and third-party (not vendor) evals.
European models, especially under EU regulatory pressure, are relatively tidier in archiving standards, data indexing and systematic traceability. The US and China have larger-scale models and more aggressive training infrastructure, but Europe has no model matching frontier scale yet, so its documentation edge remains untested at scale.
Core takeaway: distrust unverifiable "we're safe" claims — auditability itself is a form of safety evidence.
