Reddit theory: OpenAI's frequent resets are a plan to quietly claw back compute at the next model launch
DynaBeast · reddit · 2026-10-22
A Reddit user lays out a theory about OpenAI's frequent "Tibo resets":
- OpenAI has been ramping up available compute as datacenters come online; a reset every 2-3 days effectively gives users 2-3x their promised plan usage at no cost to the bottom line
- But base limits aren't raised because resets can be stopped anytime
- With a big model release (Astra 6.5 or Bel) speculated after the 28-day reset window, the poster expects OpenAI to simply stop issuing resets when usage spikes — cutting effective supply back without ever removing anything promised, without cutting off subscriptions or nerfing models, mirroring the $200-plan shutdown after the last hot launch
The author calls it Sam and Tibo's "master plan." (Unverified community speculation.)
