Google's on-device AI matches expert sonographers in prenatal ultrasound study

Google Research published a prospective multi-center study in JAMA Network Open showing "blind sweep" ultrasound with on-device AI lets non-sonographers deliver expert-level gestational age assessments. Trained on 1,968 retrospective participants plus a 120-person adaptation set, the model hit 4.18 days mean absolute error vs 4.18 days for experts (non-inferior), generalizing to new handheld hardware in Nairobi with zero local fine-tuning—cutting sonographer training from years to hours for low-resource settings.
