Just 1% of companies account for 80% of OpenAI and Anthropic spending — and growth has stalled

Per corporate card data from Ramp covering 70,000+ US businesses, just 1% of companies drive 80% of all business spending on OpenAI and Anthropic — more concentrated than any other software category Ramp tracks — and the spending has just stalled. VC-backed startups spend a median $76 per employee per month on AI, more than 10x the $7 at PE-backed firms. YipitData found Anthropic's top 1% of customers generated 46% of its revenue in August, nearly doubling from 25% a year earlier, raising questions about how many whale customers are funded by the same VCs backing Anthropic. The data points to a structural risk: AI spend is heavily dependent on venture money with narrow real-enterprise penetration.
