Codex desktop on Windows fails to start Worktree chats with serialization TypeError; Local mode unaffected
meza · ghdev · 2026-10-21
A new issue (#55827) on openai/codex reports that the Codex desktop app on Windows (version 26.1016.6573.0) consistently fails to start new chats in Worktree mode with the error "Cannot serialize value: (couldn't stringify value)", reproducing across multiple repositories.
Key details:
- Local mode works fine on the same repos, and existing conversations can continue receiving messages.
- Desktop logs show five [Composer] submit failed entries, all with mode=worktree and errorName=TypeError.
- The stack trace points to the devaluate serialization logic inside the app-shared bundle, suggesting a non-JSON-serializable value in the submit path.
No workaround beyond using Local mode is currently known.
