89% of Biomedical Papers Now Show LLM-Assisted Writing, Data Shows
lemire · x · 2026-10-22
Daniel Lemire shares statistics on open-access papers in PubMed Central, claiming that virtually all science papers are now written with AI assistance — a threshold already crossed by December 2025.
The chart shows the share of biomedical papers exhibiting LLM-assisted writing:
- 2023: 19%
- 2024: 52%
- 2025: 77%
- Dec. 2025: 89%
In three years, LLM use in scientific writing went from under 20% to nearly 90%, effectively making AI a default tool in research writing and upending assumptions behind AI-text detection and academic norms.
