Levels.fyi data: Meta homegrown engineers hit Senior at 84% vs 40% for outside hires
FinanceYF5 · x · 2026-10-22
An analysis of levels.fyi submissions shows homegrown engineers at big tech get promoted far faster than equally experienced outside hires:
- Meta: 84% of engineers who never worked elsewhere reached Senior or above, vs just 40% of external hires
- Google: 61% vs 29%; Microsoft: 47% vs 25%
The sample covers US software engineers with 4-12 years of experience (Oct 2024 to Oct 2026), excluding managers. "Outside hires" joined after at least 2 years at another company.
About 40% of Meta's external employees joined recently; the gap narrows after 4+ years of tenure, but starting level matters — promotion after joining is never guaranteed. The Staff-level gap is even starker: Meta 26% vs 6%, with Amazon, Oracle and Capital One showing a 2.2x homegrown advantage.
