Michael Abramoff, a pioneer of autonomous retinal AI, notes multiple US states have enacted laws specifically restricting retinal images as personally identifiable information. The same reasoning applies to all medical images and may herald broader restrictions that could make medical research and medical AI development difficult or impossible. His team also studied how retinal imaging has been depicted in art history, finding over 98% of descriptions share a pattern (thread truncated).
