Coinbase's x402 was built to kill API keys; Stripe ships Machine Payments SDK for agent payments
kleffew94 · x · 2026-10-22
Kevin Kleffew, GTM Lead at Coinbase Dev Platform, explains the motivation behind the x402 agent payment protocol:
- x402 was designed so agents can pay for tools with a single wallet signature instead of signing up for hundreds of API keys
- The same week, Stripe launched its Machine Payments SDK, letting agents pay for APIs in stablecoins one request at a time
Both point to the same trend: per-request machine-to-machine micropayments are becoming baseline infrastructure for the agent economy, potentially displacing the API-key distribution model.
