Bratton: We Are Discovering Machine Intelligence, Not Inventing It
bratton · x · 2026-10-22
Google AI researcher Benjamin Bratton argues alignment runs both ways: the key question is how society will counter-align and counter-adapt to AGI and ASI, just as it did with writing, the printing press, and electricity.
He insists the agonistic, pluralistic dynamic between human agents "is not a problem to be solved — it's the condition for a vibrant and healthy society." His boldest claim: "we are discovering machine intelligence more than we are inventing it" — the parameters coming into focus were always there, like electricity.
