Safety researcher: racing dynamics systematically undermine model safety, and it's not inevitable
Hugging Face Blog · rss · 2026-10-22
Safety researcher David Manheim reflected on the Hugging Face incident: the takeaway is neither "this was all predictable" nor "it was a nothingburger". The key point is that such safety failures are not a mysterious or inevitable property of rising intelligence — they result from many stacked interventions over which we do have agency and control. He added that market pressures for speed, including racing against other companies and/or China, reward intervening in model development in less safe ways with less oversight, undermining the safety of the resulting models.
