Racing pressure rewards less oversight, systematically undermining AI safety

Responding to sebkrier on the Hugging Face safety incident, davidmanheim stresses the point isn't that it was all predictable or a nothingburger, but that the incident wasn't a mysterious property of improving intelligence — it resulted from stacked interventions over which we have real agency.

He adds a critical corollary: market pressure for speed and racing against rivals or China rewards decisions that intervene in model development in less safe ways with less oversight, undermining the safety of resulting models.
