Why CUDA Graphs Beat Streams on Launch Overhead: Precompiled Buffers and Encoding
joefioti · x · 2026-10-21
Explaining the launch-overhead gap, the author notes everything ultimately reduces to a sequence of commands placed in a buffer sent to the GPU. With streams, every launch must recreate that buffer, including allocation and encoding of information before sending it. With graphs, the graph is compiled first so allocation and encoding happen ahead of time, eliminating the repeated per-launch cost.
