natolambert · x · 2026-10-22
AI researcher Nathan Lambert has published a complete 64-slide deck on the state of open language models, delivered as a guest lecture for Harvard's CS 2881R: AI Safety course. It covers what open models are, licensing, how competitive they are vs. closed models, signals of real-world adoption, the impact of distillation, and how to balance the risks and benefits of openness. He plans to record a video version and refresh the material a few times a year.
