Sentry ups open source giving to $1M a year as Pledge members pass $7.4M paid
zeeg · x · 2026-10-22
Sentry has raised its annual open source maintainer budget from $750K to $1M, with over half going directly to developers. CEO zeeg renews his "put up or shut up" call for companies relying on open source.
- Sentry has been funding maintainers meaningfully for 5 years and added NumFOCUS (nonprofit behind AI-relevant scientific computing tools) to its supported foundations.
- The Open Source Pledge, started by Sentry, marks its second anniversary: 37 member companies have paid a total of $7,421,535 to maintainers and foundations.
- Argument: companies that build on open source — including the whole AI stack — should stop freeloading and pay maintainers.
