Claude Desktop update migrates only 8 of 20 projects to new environments model
drdrpeterson · ghdev · 2026-10-15
A user reports that after updating Claude Desktop (macOS) to 2.37337.1, the migration to the new environments model kept only 8 of their 20 project folders, dumping all sessions from the other 12 into a single flat Default group. No data was lost—sessions and transcripts remain on disk—but per-project organization is gone and must be rebuilt manually one environment at a time.
Their forensic details: ccd-session-presets.json was written once at update time with exactly 8 presets, matching the 8 folders with the most sessions (the cutoff fell inside a tie between two folders with 17 sessions each). The 12 dropped folders still hold 133 valid, unarchived session records. Manually creating an environment for a dropped folder immediately moves its sessions out of Default, so grouping-by-cwd works—the migration just never created those environments. The source of truth appears to be the renderer localStorage key persisted.ccd-session-presets.<accountId>, with the JSON file only a mirror.
