Frontier AI fails silently out of distribution — no metaphor fixes a broken paradigm

Data-viz expert Gerard Sans debated AI reliability with DrAtoosa. His core argument: the problem with frontier AI is never when it works (in distribution), but that it fails silently (sparse, out of distribution).
A text sampler carries inherent uncertainty and distributional tails are not going away, he argues; wrapping the issue in AGI, ASI, agents or swarm narratives doesn't fix a fragile paradigm. Metaphors cannot overturn a probabilistic certainty — if you use AI, it is silently causing you issues.
