Teardown of iPhoneDuo charging reveals hidden SPR AVS support, ~45W draw
APPSO · wechat · 2026-10-21
APPSO's protocol-level charging test found an undisclosed detail: the iPhoneDuo supports SPR AVS (Standard Power Range Adjustable Voltage Supply), actively negotiating it on every compatible charger tested—something Apple never mentioned at launch. Unlike fixed-step USB PD (5V/9V/15V), SPR AVS allows continuous 0.1V voltage steps and a new current-control scheme, finally catching up to Android's long-established PPS.
Measured: a steady 15V at up to 3A (45W peak), 42–45% in 20 minutes, full in 85 minutes—same speed as fixed-step PD, so the change is architectural, not speed. Apple's 60W charger recommendation is about thermal headroom, not a threshold. Last year's iPhone 17 didn't enable SPR AVS; this year the whole lineup does, and PD 3.2 mandates SPR AVS on power supplies above 27W. Advice: existing 15V/3A PD chargers still work fine; buyers of new chargers should check for SPR AVS support on the spec sheet.
