Claude Mods: flipping the agent harness into a programmable Attention Interface

Latent Space · rss · 2026-10-21

Latent Space's deep dive on Claude Mods—TS/JS plugin functions inside Claude Code that observe and override events (prompts, tool calls, renders), effectively middleware for the agent harness. Thesis: as models absorb harness capabilities into weights, the remaining harness faces the human and becomes the "Attention Interface"—deciding when the agent interrupts you and what decisions it escalates; ultimately the harness could become a platform like the browser. Highlights: the built-in You Should Know mod (a side-agent flagging buried decisions; it once saved 45 files of uncommitted work from being discarded), the author's open-source ModSmith with a Next Steps Supervisor mod, and a three-way comparison—ChatGPT's Intelligent UI (model-generated interfaces, zero setup, little control), Cursor's PR Routing & Approval (team-level review triage with a rule that agents can't relax their own PR's approval policy), vs. Claude Mods where the user programmatically shapes the interface, with Claude able to build mods for you. Anthropic already ships six built-in mods.
