JD builds robot after-sales network with ~100 makers, targets 100k repair jobs in 5 years

JD has partnered with nearly 100 robotics companies including Zhiyuan, DeepRobotics, EngineAI and Songyan Dynamics for robot maintenance, and plans a global after-sales network spanning 100+ countries over five years, creating 100,000+ robot repair engineer jobs.

Founder Liu Qiangdong's play is twofold: retrain frontline couriers (via the 'Nirvana Plan' with 120 partner schools) to service the robots that may replace their delivery work, and build a '4S dealership for robots' — including a 'robot ambulance' service with a 1-minute response / 2-hour on-site / same-day fix standard, plus parts supply, recycling and an after-sales SaaS system.

The piece also flags real risks: repair jobs won't scale 1:1 with displaced roles, one engineer may service dozens of robots, and early-stage robot volumes may be too thin to sustain repair centers. Still, as robots move from showpieces into factories and warehouses, after-sales service looks like a market worth watching.
