Robotics insider: weak open-weight models make the field feel pre-ChatGPT
paigeinsf · x · 2026-10-21
An AI practitioner who joined the field after ChatGPT launched and now works in robotics says the lack of strong open-weight models makes robotics feel like stepping back in time — there's only so much you can build without them.
She sees this as an opportunity: more model developers will emerge, research and post-training will decentralize, and an entirely new infrastructure ecosystem will need to be built around open models. "We're still so early," she concludes.
