AI is rewriting the long-standing rule that founder age and experience predict startup success.
The old data (around 2020):
- Top 0.1% startup founders averaged 45; a 50-year-old founder was twice as likely to succeed as a 30-year-old
- Tech founders averaged near 40, and successful exits averaged 46.7 years old
- 3+ years of industry experience doubled the odds of building a top company
The AI shift:
- Average age of AI unicorn founders fell from 40 in 2020 to 29 in 2024
- AI startups now reach unicorn status in 4.7 years on average, versus 7 previously
- Outside AI, unicorn founder ages keep rising, especially in healthcare and biotech
- 40% of unicorn founders are repeat entrepreneurs; 25% are immigrants
