Demis Hassabis: AI could implicitly acquire self-awareness within 5-10 years
karmicoder · x · 2026-10-21
Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis says today's systems show no sense of self-awareness or consciousness, but it "may happen implicitly" and future systems might acquire some feeling of self-awareness. They lack curiosity, imagination and intuition, he argues, and within five to ten years we'll see systems that can not only solve major scientific problems but originate them. The poster adds a philosophical take: consciousness may emerge from acting purely for the love of it, a reward function with no external reward.
