Google AI Overviews rewrites citation text with generated summaries, not page quotes
gaganghotra_ · x · 2026-10-21
SERPalerts noticed Google AI Overviews now summarize cited content rather than quoting it verbatim. Comparing against his own homepage, the poster confirmed words appearing in the overview (e.g. "reach") don't exist on the page at all — Google generates the text based on what it deems most relevant to the query.
Implication: site owners may see AI Overviews "cite" them with wording that diverges from their actual copy, a new variable for brand control and SEO monitoring.
