Dario Amodei responds to AI safety critique: admits some mistakes, defends Anthropic's theory of change

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published a lengthy weekend response to AI safety researcher Nathan Calvin's critique. He praised Calvin's investigative work, argued that large frontier AI companies deserve harsh daily criticism as a healthy feature of a free society, and conceded some cited examples were genuine mistakes by Anthropic. But he disagreed with the core thrust, contending that much of what Calvin criticizes flows from Anthropic's long-held theory of change. Calvin, in his original post, said the response still fails to engage his central concern about Anthropic's behavioral patterns and called for a broader reckoning about how external safety-minded observers view the company.
