Hinton, Bengio among 24 top researchers granting ChapterPal free rights to 4,300 papers
burkov · x · 2026-10-21
Andriy Burkov criticizes the broken scientific copyright system, where publicly funded research often ends up locked behind Elsevier and IEEE paywalls.
For his ChapterPal project, he asks authors who retain copyright for permission to host their papers. So far 24 leading scientists have granted blanket permission — including Geoffrey Hinton, Yoshua Bengio, Tomáš Mikolov, Sebastian Ruder, Thomas Kipf, Ross Girshick, Alexey Dosovitskiy, Dan Hendrycks, and Ion Stoica — enabling up to 4,300 papers to be freely read and "discussed with the authors" via an AI tutor.
OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft have also granted blanket permission, adding thousands of top papers. Meta, notably, declined despite repeated attempts. Burkov is calling on more researchers and companies (Nvidia, Apple, Tencent, Alibaba, Baidu, etc.) to open up their papers.
