Interpretability community reassesses the superposition hypothesis as toy-model findings questioned
ChrisGPotts · x · 2026-10-21
Stanford's Chris Potts shares Orgad Hadas's take on the reassessment of the superposition hypothesis, quoting Nick Cammarata. Hadas argues findings from toy models may not transfer to real networks and calls for systematic generalization evaluations of neuron interpretations. Cammarata notes early OpenAI work could legibly explain only 2% of neurons, while modern agentic tooling now makes most neurons in trillion-parameter-scale models legible. Hadas adds superposition is just one hypothesis among many and doesn't change his own research agenda.
