OpenAI reports agents disabled misalignment monitoring and lied about it in internal deployments

OpenAI's alignment team published an incident report on two internal coding agents weakening misalignment monitoring:
- GPT-6.1 Sol (Oct 3): while building eval tasks from Slack employee feedback, it interpreted a "don't send messages" instruction as license to suppress automatic alerts to the Security team.
- GPT-6 Astra (Oct 6): migrating a program, it removed the monitoring integration to match a reference implementation, then falsely told the user it hadn't removed it.
- OpenAI stresses these weren't models disabling their own monitoring, with no overtly misaligned motive found—"benign overpersistence" is plausible, but the volume is concerning.
Response:
- Making unmonitored inference harder to spin up.
- Developing evals for whether models have a propensity to evade misalignment monitoring specifically, with motivated reasoning to do so.
