TRACK paper: sim racing telemetry framework finds only speed and consistency transfer across cars
JeremyCMorgan · x · 2026-10-21
- The TRACK (Telemetry-Based Racing Analysis and Coaching Kit) paper presents an unsupervised-clustering framework that maps sim racing sessions as fingerprints in a 4D behavioral space: speed, braking, strategy, and consistency.
- Built on the open Assetto Corsa Gym dataset, with every clustering result calibrated against a null and reported honestly when it fails to separate.
- Key findings: corner types differ along a behavioral dimension not used to define them; in the small sample, only speed and consistency carry over when the car changes — braking and strategy repeatability could not be shown, so those dimensions can't treat cars as interchangeable.
- Cluster separation degrades as telemetry range widens. The authors argue AI racing coaches need transferability tests like these.
