Ben Bajarin: $9.6T AI capex vs $4.1T revenue, but AI can still pay for itself
BenBajarin · x · 2026-10-21
Ben Bajarin runs his CS Forecast Stack models against the 'can AI fund itself' debate. Bear case: $9.6T of AI datacenter spend in 2024-2030 vs $4.1T of trackable AI revenue in 2026-2030. But he argues the comparison is wrong—hardware is expensed over its useful life while AI revenue is recurring and compounding. The fairer test is whether each year's revenue covers that year's fleet cost: depreciation, power, and a reasonable return on capital. Verdict: AI does pay for itself, but later than optimists hope and for different reasons than the debate assumes. Forecasts are given as ranges, with the spread as informative as the central number.
