Skip the open access fees: NIH-funded papers must go on PMC with no embargo

Stanford professor Anshul Kundaje advises researchers to stop paying steep gold open access fees. The zero-cost route: release a preprint, publish the paper as closed access, then upload the final Author Accepted Manuscript to PMC.
Per NIH, author manuscripts from NIH-funded work must be posted publicly to PMC without an embargo — free of charge, with no open access plan required. NIHMS deposit processing currently takes roughly 2-3 weeks after approval of a complete submission.
