OpenAI has acquired Orchestra Bio to build AI agents for drug development, the latest move in a growing arms race with Anthropic over AI in bio. OpenAI launched GPT-Rosalind for life sciences, partnered with Novo Nordisk (plus work with Moderna and Amgen), and now automates drug development workflows via Orchestra Bio. Anthropic acquired Coefficient Bio for $400M, launched Claude Science with Novo Nordisk, and built its own wet lab where 950 Claude agents helped uncover a novel enzyme system. Both labs are moving deeper into the actual process of discovering and developing new medicines.
