terrio author hits back at claims his pure-Rust GDAL alternative is slower
giswqs · x · 2026-10-21
Open-source geospatial developer Qiusheng Wu (giswqs) posted a lengthy response to criticism of terrio, his new pure-Rust geospatial data I/O library. A screenshot shows LGND AI's head of engineering Jeff Albrecht arguing on LinkedIn that terrio isn't truly pure Rust, relies on GDAL to understand legacy formats, benchmarks slower than GDAL in many cases, over-claims its capabilities, and fragments the Rust ecosystem by not building on existing crates. Wu says he builds tools for real pain points in his own research and teaching, prioritizes ease of use, welcomes constructive criticism, and will keep building.
