Reuters reports that ByteDance, Alibaba and Tencent have ordered over 3 million of Nvidia's export-compliant RTX PRO 5500 cards, worth more than $35 billion at list prices.
- Total orders from Chinese customers exceed 6 million cards, but Nvidia says it can produce no more than 3 million globally in 2027; partners may receive only 5-10% of requested volumes
- The RTX PRO 5500 is a workstation chip — among the most powerful Nvidia cards still available to Chinese buyers, as Blackwell B300 is banned for China and H200 exports face case-by-case licensing
- Chinese firms are buying mainly for AI inference rather than training, with commercial deliveries expected in Q1 2027
- The earlier China-targeted RTX 6000D saw little major-customer interest, was discontinued, and its China market price has doubled
