Meta trains on-device agents inside simulated 'digital lives' that the models can't detect

A Reddit post highlights the synthetic-data section of Meta's Muse-Glimmer-30B (on-device agentic model) paper: to train tool-using LLM agents, Meta runs an always-on agent harness inside Docker containers with simulated environments mimicking email, calendar, docs, WhatsApp, code repos and other apps, plus access to the real web.
Following the Agents Research Environments design principles, each "universe" is a pre-populated digital life — a persona backed by a network of 10–14 contacts with weeks of correspondence, calendar events, documents and messaging history. These personas form cohesive digital lives, deliberately keeping the agent agnostic to the simulated nature of its interactions. The post's meme framing — millions of Meta AIs living lives they don't know are fake — describes what is essentially a large-scale simulation pipeline for generating agent training data.
