PaintPilot: open-source MCP lets AI agents paint step-by-step inside Photoshop
dslava · reddit · 2026-10-20
PaintPilot (v1.8.0-preview.1, Windows + Photoshop) is an open-source MCP project that lets AI agents create and edit images inside Photoshop using real brushes, layers, and editable documents — instead of one-shot generation.
Two modes:
- Painting Mode: the agent paints step by step, inspects its work, and self-corrects. A Guard system checks perspective, proportions, occlusion, lighting, materials, and layer preservation, with an Art Director/Critic workflow, visual checkpoints, and undo/recovery. Interactive — you can question decisions mid-session. The author recommends starting with the lenient simplegraphic profile
- Photoshop Tools: direct UXP commands (rename/move layers, set opacity) with no artistic review pipeline
The core thesis: separate guarded autonomous creative work from plain tool execution. Also includes a control panel and a recorder that captures operations for video/subtitle production. The author admits results are rough — proportions, brush behavior, and finishing long sessions remain hard — and this isn't meant to compete with image generators on quality.
