The New York Times reports that startup Radical Numerics claims the first use of AI-designed viruses to treat a human patient — a custom phage targeting a deadly bacterial infection, with the hope of clearing antibiotic-resistant microbes.
- The company posted a technical report but declined to share patient or physician details citing confidentiality; the report is not peer-reviewed, and the company says the trial was FDA-authorized.
- Its genome language model Omnii-1 aims to "unify all of biology," spanning eight applications including cancer vaccines, biodefense pathogen detection (cloud and edge), noncoding causal variant analysis for rare disease, and protein design for rare-earth metal separation.
- CEO Eric Nguyen said the company intends to publish its scientific findings.
