Hiring in the agent era: problem decomposition and validation beat memorized knowledge
yunta_tsai · x · 2026-10-21
How should human skills be valued in interviews as agentic tools rise?
- Knowledge is no longer scarce: a candidate's value lies in harnessing tools to solve problems slightly outside their experience.
- Two core abilities: cleanly decomposing problems, and validating results with good judgment.
- Interview method: ask candidates to rebuild part of an unfamiliar legacy system—do they use agents to map it, surface options, weigh performance/cost/scalability/maintainability/risk?
- Hammer analogy: treating tools as a black-box oracle yields plausible but fragile results; the try-observe-refine feedback loop is where real skill lives.
- Attitude matters: candidates who leave with curiosity and energy adapt quickly without overfitting to yesterday's tools.
