Opus 5.5 refuses to draft thesis paragraph, citing the university's AI policy and plagiarism risk
StatisticianSorry924 · reddit · 2026-10-20
A Reddit user working on their thesis with Opus 5.5 asked the model to draft an example paragraph — and it refused. The model recalled a memory of the university's AI policy (which permits AI only for language checks and research), explained that a drafted paragraph would count as AI-generated content requiring declaration, and warned that text staying too close to it would constitute plagiarism and fail the thesis.
The screenshot shows the model framing it as "that risk is yours, not mine," explaining the danger before leaving the decision to the user. The poster called it exactly the kind of guardrail you'd want.
