Agentic era upends marketplaces: Shopify-style embrace vs Resy-style mess
rebeccakaden · x · 2026-10-20
A discussion on what happens to marketplaces as agents eat discovery.
Quoted @livjenkss outlines two futures: (1) each marketplace builds its own agent and stays the destination — likely where brand/taste and exclusive supply matter (restaurants, events, fashion, e.g. Resy); (2) agent-to-agent infra lets personal agents search across marketplaces via API, reducing platforms to suppliers.
rebeccakaden adds: in the marketplace era aggregating supply was king; in the agentic era supply is unconstrained. Platforms clinging to ad eyeballs (Amazon) or drowning in demand-driven spam (Resy) are in a messy middle, while those embracing agentic demand (Shopify) face massive opportunity.
