Training a small downscaler in 1 hour on one GPU cuts weather forecast error by up to 21%

Hugging Face researchers show you don't need a bigger AI weather model to get higher resolution: they trained a small downscaler in about an hour on a single GPU that refines AIFS-ENS temperature forecasts over France from 28 km to 5.5 km. Against Météo-France stations it cut RMSE by 14% and CRPS by 21% over the first two days (9% and 14% over ten days). The post walks through the downscaler components and full training process.
