dotey details why he ditched GPUI for Electron when building apps with coding agents
dotey · x · 2026-10-20
dotey shared his pain points building the Mac app baocut with Rust's GPUI framework, concluding that Electron is the better choice for desktop development in the agent era.
GPUI issues: complex UIs likely require forking; poor accessibility/keyboard support; Rust builds consume massive CPU and disk (unusable on a 16GB Mac Mini, no parallel builds); slow compiles with no hot reload — minutes per UI change, costly for both humans and agents; agent verification requires slow, expensive computer use.
Why Electron wins: fast builds, hot reload, and Electron apps can run inside the agent's built-in browser so verification needs no computer use. He compiles performance-critical rendering to wasm, and keeps Rust transcription/TTS modules as worker processes, beating pure TS + Node on the backend.
