Cohere Labs Africa community launches Afri-Aya V2 after Luganda review task became a startup
Cohere_Labs · x · 2026-10-20
Cohere Labs' Regional Africa community kicks off Afri-Aya V2, moving from roadmap to active workstreams: per-language data collection, evaluation and a research paper, quality control, and community operations.
The announcement is paired with a retrospective from Kato Steven Mubiru (Crane AI Labs co-founder): a simple email asking him to review a Luganda word spreadsheet led to work feeding the Aya training pipeline, a startup, and a Gold Award. His lesson: gates open not because of who you are, but because small tasks are done to standard.
