Author: OpenAI dropped export controls, then took up to $100B from Nvidia
GarrisonLovely · x · 2026-10-20
In a passage from his book Obsolete, Garrison Lovely argues OpenAI abandoned export controls: after backing them in its March 2025 White House AI Action Plan submission, Altman told reporters five months later "my instinct is that it doesn't work," and just over a month after that Nvidia announced up to $100B in investment. Former OpenAI policy chief Miles Brundage worried Nvidia could gain board influence and distort OpenAI's policy advocacy. Lovely calls the about-face — scoffing at slowdowns for safety while selling advanced chips to China — disappointing.
