Polars 2.0 makes streaming the default, speeding queries up to 2.8x with zero code changes

Polars 2.0 (released Oct 6, 2026) is officially a "boring" release — it changes defaults instead of adding APIs. A side-by-side comparison with 1.x on real NYC taxi data shows why it matters:
- Streaming engine by default: collect() now runs lazy queries on the streaming engine, which splits data into chunks so pipeline steps overlap. The same queries run up to 2.8x faster (v1.44.2 vs v2.0.0) with no code changes.
- Stricter types, fail-fast behavior: queries now error out early instead of silently producing unexpected results, catching bugs at the source.
The takeaway: a boring release that delivers free performance and correctness wins.
